Absolutely outstanding Japanese Edo period exceptionally large Arita shallow bowl. The bowl is 40cm (almost 16 inches) in diameter but the outstanding feature of this early bowl is the quality of the brushwork in underglaze Cobalt blue which is also of a glorious colour.
An rare example of the highest quality porcelain glaze decoration workmanship. This would rival the finest pieces of Chinese Imperial wares of the 17th and 18th Century.
The subject matter is "The Master of the Rocks" a theme often seen in Chinese porcelain of the Kangxi Period.
The bowl dates to the 18th Century.
The bowl has the Imperial marks of the Chinese Emperor Chenghau (1465-1487). Commonly used on the earliest 17th and 18th century Japanese porcelain The marks are put not to deceive but as a statement of quality and homage to this earlier period.
