Rare and impressive large "Old Master" painting of Christ's "Decent from the Cross" The painting is late 18th Century, early 19th Century and is a faithful interpretation of the Painting by French Artist Charles Le Brun "Decent from the Cross" painted in 1679

Charles le Brun (1619-1690) was born in Paris and achieved great success becoming the Court Painter to King Louis XIV. He was one of the foremost painters of the 17th Century. One of the leading Baroque painters. He painted a number of variations of "Decent from the Cross" during his life using the same dramatic intensity of an austere background with dramatic touches of vivid colour.

This series of paintings, was particularly popular and inspired many Artists in the years after his passing.

Here we have a follower of Charles Le Brun, which by style I place as Italian, painting their own version in homage to the Great artist approximately 100 years after his passing.

The painting is large and dramatic.

Canvas size 33 inches x 24 inches  (84cm x 62cm) in almost certainly the original Gilded frame.

The painting has at some time being cleaned and relined but with minimal intervention.

This would make a dramatic painting to hang on any wall.
