Outstanding late19th century ART NOUVEAU hall stand /mirror (almost certainly) from the Nancy Ecole of Artisans and designers and Emile Galle so influential at this period. A truly remarkable and rare classic piece of this finest French "Arte Nouveaux" design from northern France. The main wood is oak and walnut with various other wood veneers used for the marquetry including fruit woods and rosewood.
Superb quality and an historically important piece.
The Ecole de Nancy was a group of some of France's finest artisans and designers working between 1890-1914.
The founders of this group included Emile Galle, Louis Majorelle, Jean-Antonin Daum, and Ebenist and Furniture designer Eugene Valin.
Emile Galle as well as working in his famous glass design created a series of furniture designs using the new aim of the Art Nouveau movement "back to nature" and flowing forms and used the natural fauna of the Lorraine Region (Nancy is in the region of Lorraine) such as irises, ginkgo, pennywort, water lily etc. This can be seen in this piece.
The piece is not signed Galle that I can find (some of his pieces were not) but has been priced accordingly. With the signature the price rises to over 5 figures.
