Rare and Impressive Very Large Early Delft large Charger Dish in the "Kraak" style in imitation of the Chinese dishes of the same period. 17th Century most probably made in London, England.

Similar items were also produced in the Netherlands and across other centres in Europe at this time so being 100% sure of the place of production is normally very difficult to confirm however I have seen very similar dishes attributed to London Lambeth and Southwark and the tone of the glaze which has a distinct Indigo colouration was more often seen on English pieces than the Netherlands (See main picture which captures this colour). For these reasons I attribute this dish to being made in the UK.

The tin glaze wares were made to copy the Oriental Porcelain from China and Japan which were far beyond the pocket of most at that time. Far more fragile than the Oriental porcelain dishes sadly pieces of this period are increasingly hard to find. This is a wonderful example of English 17th Century Delftware Circa 1670, superbly decorated and very impressive.

This is a rare piece. Condition is good for Delft of this age. Some chips and loss of glaze to the edging which is common on early delft. There are signs of some professional restoration but this in no way detracts from the dish.

This style of dish is known as "Kraak" ware. The name comes from the Dutch name for the Portuguese trading vessels - the Caracca.
The Portuguese were the first European nation to establish large scale trading ties with China during the Ming Dynasty which was then overtaken by the Dutch East Indies company but the name for these dishes remained. The style is characterised by the border panels around a central panel design and was a very popular design of export dish to Europe during the 17th century produced in China which started in the Ming Dynasty
