Superb example of a DERBY "Worcester"  pattern porcelain Cup and Saucer in excellent condition

Circa 1885

Derby was throughout the 18th and 19th centuries one of, if not the most important porcelain manufacturers in the British Isles and rivalled companies such as Sevres in France for quality and prestige.

Here is a very fine example of the Derby Porcelain manufacturing and their quality. The cup and the saucer are with a fluted body and beautifully hand decorated with magnificent gilding and Japonesque flower painting mirroring the early Worcester designs (hence the name) but very much in fashion for the period where you had the huge interest in all items from the Orient.
Both cup and saucer are in excellent condition with very little wear at all to the gilding.

The Cup and Saucer aside from having the correct Derby marks of the period also have the marks of the retailer John Mortlock of Oxford Street, London

John Morlock was considered the most important china retailer in London in the early nineteenth century, they had enormous power and influence over the manufacturers, often insisting that the products that Mortlocks sold should bear the Mortlock mark as well as or without that of the original maker.

In common with other major London houses, Mortlocks employed independent decorators to finish its wares. The Mortlock product was of a high quality, with a Coalport dinner service for example, retailing for 200 guineas (equivalent to £20,000 today). A single dinner plate might sell for £8, six months’ wages for an agricultural labourer!
