Gothic Windsor Chair- Ash, Elm & Fruitwood -Strawberry Hill House Revival-19th C
£0.00
Outstanding 19th Century Gothic Revival Windsor Chair in Ash, Elm and Fruitwood with Crinoline stretcher.
Very Rare and Sort after Design which first appeared Mid-18th Century and was linked to the famous "Strawberry Hill House" built for Horace Walpole ( Writer, Art Historian and Politician) starting 1749. This saw the start of the hugely fashionable "Gothic Revival" in the 18th Century which continued right through the 19th Century culminating in the Gothic architecture of Pugin which included the famous Houses of Parliament.
These chairs are also sometimes referred to as "Chippendale Windsor" due to their complex design. Gothic Windsor chairs incorporated elements of Gothic Architecture with the Pointed Arches and Gothic Tracery in the splat design. Rightly considered the pinnacle of Windsor Chair design.
Windsor chairs first appeared in the early 18th Century as outdoor furniture and were constructed by specialist makers who used the native woods of there area. Often called the Quintessential English Chair Design the all wood construction was both robust and surprisingly comfortable. The chairs were quickly adopted as indoor dining furniture. The basic form went through many variations and the Gothic Windsor spread to the USA with the English settlers, where it was adapted and developed further.
This a lovely example of a rarely found Gothic Windsor with a nice rich and warm patination.
18th Century examples sell for over £6000 so this is great opportunity
