Superb Equestrian oil painting  believed to be by the artist John Nost Sartorius Jr (1759-1828). The painting is signed but has rubbed but it is almost certainly the signature of John Sartorius.

The picture depicts a Bay horse and hound at the stable with an additional horse in the background. Painting dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century.

John Nost Sartorius  came from  along line of artists in his family and was the son of horse-artist Francis Sartorius and the grandson of John Sartorius He was patronised by the leading sportsmen of the day, such as the Prince of Wales, the Earl of Derby, Lord Foley, Sir Charles Bunbury, and many others, and his pictures (some of them of large size) were found in many country houses. He preferred to be known as John N. Sartorius Jr. to distinguish himself from his father and grandfather.

This is a fine example of this halcyon period of British Horse painting.
