Wonderful colour and quality
This is part of a set of 5 Nabeshima dishes made for the Nabeshima Shogun late 18th Century. Similar dishes can be found in the famous Shibata collection
Wonderfully decorated in underglaze Cobalt Blue in colour in a slightly Blue Magenta glaze, on the pure white porcelain so classic of Nabeshima porcelain. The design represnts the elements and nature in a very stylised form.

The base of the dishes show also the classic Nabeshima decoration of the Budhist Coins to represent Wealth and Happiness with the raised foot decorated with Kushide (comb-tooth) decoration

Nabeshima is a supreme Japanese porcelain ware that was manufactured at the Nabeshima feudal kiln located in today's Saga prefecture. Nabeshima ware was not a commercial kiln for export or local use, but made only under strict supervision for the Nabeshima family, during the Edo period.
It was produced in Lord Nabeshima of Saga Domain's kiln at Okawachi near Arita in the Edo period, for the use and benefit of the family. The name therefore derives from the family. Noted as one of the finest production of Porcelain made in Japan.
