Japanese Ko-Kutani Edo period "KIRIN" Dish- MAGNIFICENT - 18th C D 22.5cm
£275.00
Magnificent Edo period Japanese Ko-Kutani scalloped and fluted dish dating to I believe around the 1750-1780 based on the character marks as defined by the Shibata collection of Edo period Japanese porcelain however these dishes can be very hard to date precisely. It is of exceptional quality and condition for its age. Scalloped shaped to represent the Imperial Chrysanthemum with a fluted rim. By style made most probably in the Arita region as opposed to Kutani
A true collectors piece of Japanese History.
The plate is decorated in a quite rare design showing the "Kirin" a mythological Japanese /Chinese creature with a dragon like head, antlers, Dragon scales, horse like cloven feet and a fiery mane. The creature symbolises purity, justice, wisdom and good fortune.
Like the dragons the Kirin is chasing the mythical flaming pearls across the sea and the sky.
The pallet of colours is absolutely typical of the Ko-Kutani wares. Known as "Gosai-de" and features rich mustard yellows, dark Sea-greens deep reds and the beautiful Lilac purple tone. On the exterior of the dish you will find also cobalt blue underglaze. A wonderful combination with enamel overglaze colours. The dish has a four character mark "Fuki-Chosun" Good Fortune the character marks
冨貴長春 for Wealth, Nobility, Longevity, and Youth.
