Japanese late Edo period large bowl - Exceptional quality- Arita - 21.5cm D
£645.00
Rare Japanese late Edo / possibly early Meiji period Arita bowl of exceptional quality Mid19thC. The bowl is 21.5cm (almost 8.5 inches) in diameter but the outstanding feature of this piece is the quality of the artwork in underglaze Cobalt blue and overglazed enamels of a glorious colour. The design is classical Japanese, simple almost abstract but beautiful in its design. In the interior of the bowl there are four quatrefoil panels depicting the mythical shi-shi lions in a garden setting and three further panels with the stylised Buddhist lotus.
The exterior follows the same theme as the interior the base of the bowl displaying the four Fuki-Chosun marks to symbolize good fortune and a long life. The double border base also typical of this period
