Japanese Maki-E Lacquer Tenmokudai (tea bowl stand) Superb Gold design 18cm D
£275.00
Superb quality Japanese Ceremonial lacquer Tenmokudai (tea bowl stand). Late Edo /Early Meiji Period.
A tenmokudai is a traditional Japanese lacquered stand specifically designed to hold a tenmoku tea bowl during formal Japanese tea ceremonies (chanoyu), particularly for rare or prestigious tea gatherings.
This really fine example has been carved in wood and then meticulously coated with multiple layers of traditional Japanese lacquer (urushi). The design is classic Negoro lacquer showing subtle reddish-brown layers beneath worn black surfaces and incorporating refined decorative elements in fine gold of flower stems and curling mist. All traditional and symbolic motifs. The Tenmokudai also features Maki-E decoration (powdered gold) in the interior or the tea bowl holding section through to the base. Raised on a flared foot with a wide saucer base at the top and a central circular ring or rounded inner support cradling the base of the tea bowl this is a very impressive example of this fine japanese art.
Originating alongside Chinese Jian ware (tenmoku) tea bowls imported during the Kamakura and Muromachi periods, these stands became standardized in Japanese monastic and formal warrior (daimyo) tea settings. During the Edo and Meiji eras, master lacquer artisans elevated the tenmokudai from pure utilitarian ritualware into exquisite items of applied art, often preserved in custom wooden storage boxes (tomobako).
