Japanese Meiji Period Pair of Maki-e Large Lacquer Vases -Superb Quality 43cm H

SKU OL1775
Price

£525.00

Superb quality  and  a very unusual pair of large Japanese Meiji period Lacquer Maki-e  vases with their original wooden stands. The vases are extremely lightweight and made by soaking cloth in the lacquer almost in the same way "papier-mache" was used in the same period in Europe for the manufacture of furniture and other items. Placed over a mould to form the shape required.

Japanese lacquer vases from the Meiji period (1868–1912) are highly prized fine art objects created by the master craftsmen of the Edo period who  transitioned from making Samuri armour to to creating exquisite export and domestic goods. These vases sometimes combined natural wood or porcelain cores 9 please see our other vase listing) with meticulous layers of urushi tree sap lacquer, often enriched with gold dust (maki-e) to make the decoration as can be seen in these vases.

The quality of the decoration is quite outstanding in these vases !!!
