The painting depicts the marine battle of "The Four Day's Battle" . The battle took place between June 1st-4th 1666. This was the first Anglo -Dutch battle which took place in 1666. The battle took place in the North Sea between Flanders and the East coast of England. This was one of the longest naval battles in marine history. The battle caused huge losses to the English Navy losing 20 ships. The Casualties numbered 5000 sailors with over 1000 men killed. The Dutch loses were only 4 ships and casualties of 2000 men.
The quality of the painting is first class, created by American-based artist P. Ponthier, originally from Italy, who passed away in 1970. The artist follows the Renaissance approach to painting, emphasizing the craft of fine art. This dramatic painting would complement both modern and antique themes.
