Archibald George Barnes was a distinguished British-Canadian portrait painter, war artist and educator. Born in London, he trained at the St John’s Wood School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools, where he was influenced by leading figures such as John Singer Sargent and Charles Sims. His admiration for these artists shaped his own approach to portraiture – a tonal sensitivity, refined taste, and the depiction of serenity and elegance. Barnes was elected to the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in 1923, affirming his reputation as a leading figure in British portraiture. His works were widely admired in the post-war period for their calm, composed aesthetic, and are held in collections including the Royal Academy in London and the National Gallery of Canada.
