William and Mary period - Walnut and Oyster veneer Laburnum large Box with stand

£4,775.00

Stunning late 17th Century Burr Walnut, Laburnum oyster and Holly veneered large box on original walnut stand. This type of rare and highly decorative furniture featured a rectangular box with geometric inlays of "oyster" veneer, typically from olive or laburnum wood, set on a stand with bulbous or turned legs.

The oyster veneer was created from thin cross-sections of the roots or branches of trees, in this case laburnum, cut horizontally to create a decorative pattern resembling oyster shells.

The box has a walnut cross-grain moulded top and frieze, which adds to the piece's structured and formal appearance. Finally the top is finished with a holly wood veneered circular band which further adds to the beauty of this piece. Due to the labour intensive work on the veneering these items were normally only found in the homes of the extremely wealthy and highly prized

The size of this would suggest this to have been a glove box rather than  lace box which are generally smaller in size. This does however make the piece far more useable.

A rare and lovely example of a very stunning piece of furniture from over 300 years ago.
