£980.00

Superb Pair of Large Chinese carved soapstone seals, with Buddhist Lion and cubs surmounting a temple type form, cut tablet base. Square form Zhuanshu Script seals on the bases.

Beautifully carved with fine detail and a good patination  suggest an older date of manufacture than most seen for sale on the market.
A Chinese seal (印章 yìnzhāng) is a seal or stamp used to mark important documents, pieces of art, contracts, or any other item that requires a signature. Chinese seals date back more than 3000 years and are exceptionally difficult to date. The quality of the carving and patination of this pair would suggest to me a date around the early part of the 19th Century. Value wise seals have sold for millions when they can be attributed to an Imperial mark but even early 20th Century seals which can be attributed to noted Chinese important persons can be sold for well over 5 figure sums.

I have yet to be able to translate the seals (I would appreciate if anyone could help on this) so I am pricing these simply on their quality and decorative size. They would make a really impressive display in any decoration scheme or an outstanding part of any collection.
